Moving emails around would not free up any space in Gmail, because
there is only one copy of your email at any time, no matter how many labels you put on it. So in fact, labels are more space-economic than folders. And as stated above, it you don't want to see an email in your inbox any more, select it and press the "Archive" button after you applied a label to it.
