This keeps happening, several times a day. I saw a similar thread that
was only concerned about it with attachments, but mine is occurring
with or without attachments. If I close the entire window Firefox will
not shut down properly and I have to restart my Vista system. If I try
to close just the gmail tab, I get a confirmation request, stating
that "there is currently a request to the server pending. You may lose
recent changes...

Any suggestions?

Disable all addons in Firefox. Restart Firefox. Test.
