The point is that with IMAP, the Gmail Inbox in your client will match
the Gmail Inbox on the server, so you will not see the forwarded and
archived messages. They will still be in your All Mail folder, but,
unless you choose to do so, they will not be downloaded.
If you want to continue to use POP, then you can try this:
When you open the account to turn off forwarding, change your POP
settings to "Download mail that arrives from now on". That should
avoid the messages that were forwarded.
