Seems that the API removes the body element completely, if I place
google.load(..) inside onload() or DOMContentLoaded workaround.
Browsers: FF/Safari 3 - Opera seems to work.

Anybody who knows more than me?

The answer is simple: Don't use google.load(), but the direct
insertion of the API script. Example: http://imagine-it.org/google/gmaps-samples/dynamicloading.html

Thanks Ralph, in future I will do my best to follow the guidelines.
