Ever since the trailer of Yaariyan 2 dropped, fans have been curious about the actor playing Divya Khosla Kumar’s husband. While it’s touted to be Yash Daasguptaa’s debut film, not many know that the actor is a popular face in the Bengali film industry. He started his career in the Hindi TV industry and then moved back to Kolkata and worked in Bengali serials. “My father was posted in Mumbai and I started acting to earn some pocket money. Once I went back, I decided to pursue acting seriously,” he shared while talking about his move.

In a chat with indianexpress.com, Daasguptaa shared how he shrugged off the call from Yaariyan team as a ‘bluff’. Sharing that it was hard to believe, he thought it was a ‘prank’ or someone wanted to extract money off him. “My manager spoke to them and she told me. I did not believe it for a moment. Then I was in Mumbai for some work and these guys called me to meet them. The address was of the T-Series office and that’s when it dawned on me that it was real. The meeting lasted for six hours and there was no audition. Bhushan Kumar met me and said I was through. It happened so suddenly that it was tough for me to digest that it happened for real.”

While many actors from the regional industry have often complained about how they are stereotyped, Yash Daasguptaa feels it’s a moment of pride for him as he gets to play a Punjabi guy in Yaariyan 2. “He is an urban Mumbai boy and there’s no shade of any Bengali in him. There are so many good actors who get only Bengali parts when they move to Hindi cinema but I am glad I wasn’t boxed,” he shared.

The actor added that given his father had a transferable job, he has been to every part of the country and has studied Hindi and English in school. He shared how people are often surprised that he doesn’t have a Bengali accent and thus could also dub for his part. However, he recalled how language had became a problem for him when he started off in the regional industry. “We used to speak Bengali at home but I couldn’t read or write it. So when I started doing Bengali films, that became an issue and I had to work on my language,” he shared with a laugh.

Comparing acting with cricket, Yash Daasguptaa said that working in Bollywood is like getting selected for the national team after a good season in Ranji. He added that while there is more visibility and reach now, one is still doing the same job. This is the reason he never pressured himself so that he could play the part well. When asked about his character details, the actor refused to talk about it sharing that it’s a surprise element. “There’s a plot twist that he brings in and as a team we cannot talk about it. All that I can say is that people would fall in love with him. The mature and serious audience will definitely connect with him.”

The Bengali star further shared that Yaariyan 2 is his first multi-cast project and he had his own apprehensions about the same. However, when he heard the script, he connected with it immediately. Yash said, “During a narration, I always listen to the script as an audience. If it manages to intrigue and interest me, I take it up. The character of Abhay is very relatable and I knew it was going to get its due respect.” He also shared that while in his mind he did feel like an outsider on set but with time, the team bonded like family and had a ‘blast’ shooting together.

Festive offer

Yash Daasguptaa was recently in the news over his relationship with Bengali actor Nusrat Jahan. The two welcomed their son in August 2021, while Nusrat was embroiled in a controversy over the legality of her marriage with businessman Nikhil Jain. The couple never spoke about their marital status officially but as per the actor, ‘everyone knows’ about it. When asked if the trolling around their relationship took a toll, Yash said, “You really cannot help it when you are a public figure. It might have been a scoop for people but we are a normal family. We have our own share of ups and downs. No one really knows what we go through, they can just assume. Yes, it does get bothersome sometimes but it’s part and parcel of our profession.” He added that having a child acts as a ‘relief’ factor because whenever something breaks them down, the baby becomes their motivating factor to jump back to life.

It’s interesting to know that while Daasguptaa is part of the Bharitya Janta Party (BJP), his partner Jahan is a MP associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). When asked how it is for two people with different ideologies to live under the same roof, he smiled to say, “As they say, opposite attracts. Honestly, it’s all about having respect for the other. When two people working in two different companies can stay together, why not us? It does not affect our loyalities toward each other or our parties.”
