Street Cricket – A Guide

A modified version of street cricket is a great way in which to engage and also in which assess student progress.

It is based upon ‘old’ street rules where everyone needs to be able to fulfil all the roles that are found within a Cricket game.

The basic rules are;

  • The person that ‘fields’ the ball delivers the next ball (as the bowler)
  • The fielder that gets the batter out (by catching, bowling or run out) then takes the place of the batter
  • Each time a batter hits the ball both batters must run.
  • You win either being being in bat at the end of the time limit or by scoring the most runs within your group.

The major twist of the game is that it is an individual version of the game. The Batters focus is to stay in bat – therefore providing opportunity for themselves to score runs. Fielders need to evaluate and adapt their positions so that they get to the ball first – by getting to the ball first they can bowl – this increases their chances of getting the batter out and taking their place.

If using this as an assessment task ensure that they are in groups of similar ability so that they are able to have opportunity to take on each role within the game.

The worksheet is designed for students to be able to set up and run this activity themselves, once they are set up it is a highly engaging game and gives opportunity to observe skills and decision making taking place in a high tempo and applied situations.
