CV Word - Benefits and drawbacks

In the world of CV building, Word CVs have emerged as one of the most popular choices. However, like any tool, they have their strengths and shortcomings.

In the following sections, we will delve into all that.

This exploration will allow you to make an informed decision and decide whether or not you should leverage the possibilities of Word CV templates to your greatest advantage.

Advantages of using a Word CV

User-friendly

MS Word is a widely used software with a user-friendly interface. This makes it accessible for creating and editing CVs, even for individuals who aren’t tech-savvy.

Standard format

Word formats (.doc or .docx) are a universally accepted CV format. Employers and hiring managers in the UK are accustomed to receiving CVs in Word format, which ensures your CV will display correctly on most devices.

Easy to edit

Word CVs can be effortlessly customised and updated as per your needs. This allows you to tailor your CV for each specific job application.

Template availability

MS Word provides a variety of pre-set CV templates (and so does CVHelp), which can be a helpful starting point, especially for beginners.

Integration capabilities

Word is part of the Microsoft Office suite, allowing seamless integration with other applications like Excel and PowerPoint, which could be beneficial for creating a more comprehensive professional portfolio.

Disadvantages of using a Word CV

Formatting issues

While MS Word allows for comprehensive formatting options, these can sometimes lead to inconsistencies, especially when the document is viewed on different devices or software. CV layout and formatting can potentially be altered, causing information to appear disorganised.

Compatibility

Word CVs can face compatibility issues. Some older versions of Word may not correctly display documents created in newer versions, which could affect the presentation of your CV.

File size

Word documents, especially those containing images or complex formatting, can result in large file sizes. This could be problematic when emailing CVs as some inboxes may have size restrictions.

Perception

Some employers perceive CVs made from Word CV templates as less creative or individualistic. If the hiring manager recognises the template you’ve used, it might create an impression of less effort put into the application.

Software requirement

Last but not least, to edit a CV template, you need to have Microsoft Word installed on your computer, which is not free software. Not everyone will have access to it, and this could be a barrier for some applicants.

4. Should you send your CV as a PDF file or Word document?

The format in which you send your CV can significantly impact the employer’s first impression of you.

In the UK job market, sending your CV as a PDF is generally the preferred option.

The primary reason is the consistency of formatting. PDFs ensure that the recipient sees the document exactly as you intended—layout, fonts, and formatting remain stable, irrespective of the software or device used to open the file.

This guarantees that your carefully crafted CV will retain its professional appearance.

However, some job postings may specifically request a Word format. In such cases, it is essential to follow the employer’s instructions.

Ultimately, the best course of action is to adhere to any guidelines specified in the job advert or to send a PDF if no format is indicated.
