For the 100th birthday of their founder, the most batshit carmaker in the biz needed a suitably bonkers tribute. Batmobile looks, 770 horsepower, and enough speed for Affleck to give Superman a run for his money. Well, more than his money. Clark definitely can’t afford this thing.
2/10Aston Martin DB11
We discussed it at length here, but despite any quibbling we might have over the details, the DB11 is still everything an Aston should be: incomparably fast and beautiful, and our new first pick for the world’s most stylish road trip.
3/10Morgan Electric 3 Wheeler
Steampunk’s gone electric. You’d be forgiven for thinking a three-wheeled sports car with a wooden chassis and an electric was something out of Jules Verne, but that’s exactly the kind of new-old-new mashup we’ve come to expect from the blokes at Morgan. How else can you get 150 miles of emissions-free range, clutching the steering wheel from a 1950s Ford pickup?
4/10Bugatti Chiron
Like the Veyron before it, Bugatti’s latest is all about the numbers: 1,478 horsepower, with a (electronically limited!) top speed of 261 miles per hour. And it’s better looking, and it’s cheaper! (Hah, just kidding. $2.5 million, thanks.) So clearly, of all the big-number-making cars, the Chiron is top of the big numbers hill. Unless…
5/10Koenigsegg Regera
…These guys have anything to say about it. Christian Koenigsegg and his small-batch supercar firm’s newest car certainly pushes the envelope. A hybrid with 1,500 horsepower, what’s really amazing about the Regera is what it uses those electric motors to do: It doesn’t use a gearbox at all, for very complicated car nerd reasons, and while its 250 mph top speed isn’t record breaking, the mere 20 seconds it takes to get there are. In other words, take Tesla’s fastest model, subtract 1,300 pounds of weight, and add 1,000 horsepower of gasoline engine on top. We’re no mathematicians, but that sounds pretty fucking fast.
6/10Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport
Last generation’s track-only Corvette won races worldwide, and restored America’s good name in motorsports. The new one looks to be just as good, and what’s more, you can buy one, and launch your own privateer racing team yourself—though chances are, the weak link’s not going to be the car.
7/10Fiat 124 Spider Abarth
Underneath it’s more or less a souped-up Mazda Miata, but the words “Fiat Abarth Spider” just set off all the right Italianissimo vibes in every car dork’s heart. They’re also preparing a 300 horsepower version for rallying, in case you didn’t want to be a race car driver badly enough.
8/10Spyker C8 Preliator
Spyker is a Dutch car company that makes handsome cars with lots of horsepower, this time with a supercharged V8 from Audi. But the real reason you’d ever want one is, Jesus, look at that interior: those Howard Hughes-level dials and switches, and quite possibly the most beautiful gearshift ever fitted to a car. After all, you’ll be looking at your car from inside, right?
9/10Bentley Mulsanne Grand Limousine by Mulliner
Yes, it’s a Bentley limo. Which means that there’s a drinks cabinet with crystal glassware, and every square inch of the interior is covered in rare wood or caviar-fed cow leather or something, and it’s worth every dollar of the many dollars it will cost, which are insignificant compared to the many dollars you have if you can consider buying such a thing. So if you can’t afford one, why are you even reading this? Go out there and work harder.
10/10Porsche 911R
These days, computer-controlled gear shifts are demonstrably faster and more fuel-efficient than their manual counterparts, which is why the latter is becoming extinct. The newest 911, then, maybe the purest expression of old-school driving available today: basically Porsche’s most hardcore model, the uncarpeted, roll-cage and fire extinguisher-packing GT3 RS, but with a proper stick shift.
