Remote Controls

The challenge

Sky's brief was to "design the most comfortable and easy-to-use remote control, for everyone from age 5 to 85".

Ergonomics and usability are the drivers of the design but through the distinctiveness of the styling and the use of materials the remotes have become an embodiment of Sky's brand and its values.

Co-design makes the difference

The Sky TV remote control has become a design icon since the launch of the UK's first digital satellite service in 1998. Evolving over three generations, to match Sky's technological and service innovations, the remotes are used daily by over 40 million people.

Involving users in the development process of Sky's products, together with in-depth ergonomic research, has led to their remotes becoming a template for TV interaction design.

The design

The design process started with involving users of all ages in the evaluation of the comfort and usability of design concepts. This led to the development of remote control design concepts that were further tested with users.

Incorporating actual user needs and desires as part of an iterative design process, has resulted in Sky remotes scoring very highly in satisfaction surveys.
