Sridevi Kapoor, the Bollywood star who died Saturday at 54, was found drowned in her hotel bathtub, Dubai police announced Monday.
Her brother-in-law, Sanjay, had previously said that she died of cardiac arrest.
The actress, who went by her first name alone, was described as India’s first female superstar. She made her film debut in “Thunaivan” at just 4 years old, but broke through in 1983’s “Himmatwala.”
Sridevi also had roles in some of the most famous Bollywood movies of the 1980s and ’90s, including “Nagina,” “Mr. India” and “Gumrah.”
“I have no words. Condolences to everyone who loved #Sridevi. A dark day. RIP,” Priyanka Chopra tweeted.
“Shocked to hear of passing of movie star Sridevi,” wrote President Ram Nath Kovind. “She has left millions of fans heartbroken. Her performances in films such as ‘Moondram Pirai,’ ‘Lamhe’ and ‘English Vinglish’ remain an inspiration for other actors. My condolences to her family and close associates.”
