Life as We Know It - review

There's a some slight chemistry between leads Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, but otherwise this rom-com is very ho-hum, says Cath Clarke

Whatever it takes to get her man, Katherine Heigl will do it. In this so-so romcom our heroine hits jackpot, netting a man and baby in one after her two best friends – a husband and wife – are killed in a car crash. (A severe blow to the audience, perhaps, since the wife is Mad Men's Christina Hendricks.) Now, there is no suggestion that Heigl is responsible for the accident, but conspiracy theorists note her form: relentless pursuit of matrimony in 27 Dresses and The Ugly Truth. Here, in a beyond the grave set-up, the deceased couple have bequeathed her joint custody of their toddler along with the little girl's godfather (Josh Duhamel). These two once went on a crappy blind date. She runs an organic cake shop. He does something in sport and drinks beer from the bottle. You know the drill: odd-couple hilarity with baby poo. It's not completely terrible; a little spark of something crackles between Duhamel and Heigl. Though heaven knows what she might resort to next romcom around.
