With almost 100 Bollywood films to his name and close to 30 years of experience in front of the camera, Shah Rukh Khan is a household name across the globe. However, it wasn’t always like that. A simple Delhi boy with a big dream back in the ’80s, he moved to Mumbai with a plan to make it to the top, and today, is counted as one of the most successful stars in the Indian film industry. His journey has earned him not just several accolades, but also one of his most prized possessions, Mannat, a house that first caught his eye during the shooting of his 1997 film Yes Boss. Located at Mumbai's Bandstand neighbourhood, Shah Rukh, wife Gauri Khan, and kids Aryan, AbRam and Suhana Khan's home has always been a topic of interest for fans and today, we're taking you inside the much-talked-about residence via Vogue India's shoots, and a collection of hand-picked Instagram pictures.

The rich history of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s home, Mannat

Mannat, a six-storey-high bungalow with multiple bedrooms and living areas, a gymnasium, a library, and a personal auditorium, is one of the most expensive residences in Mumbai. On any given day, you will find hordes of Khan’s fans lining up in front of its gleaming gates in the hopes of getting the perfect selfie, or catching a glimpse of the Bollywood star, who often comes to his terrace to greet well-wishers. Like Khan’s movies, the story of his home is aptly cinematic. A 1920s-era, Grade III heritage villa, Mannat was originally known as Villa Vienna. For years, Khan had his eyes on the property, and finally in 2001, the Bollywood star was able to buy it to call his home.

Gauri Khan: “Mannat unfolds at every level, with a unique and distinctive concept on each floor”

One of the city’s most popular landmarks today, Mannat was designed by the lady of the house, Gauri Khan, along with architect-designer Kaif Faquih, and took nearly a decade to complete. “Mannat unfolds at every level, with a unique and distinctive concept on each floor.” Each corner of the house has been curated thoughtfully, and the final result perfectly blends the charm of the old with the comfort of the modern.

The exterior of the house, any Shah Rukh Khan fan will tell you, is instantly recognisable thanks to its classic white pillars and big black gate. But once you step inside, the three colours that set the tone of the house are beige, brown and white. You'll also spot dark wooden flooring, plush carpets and luxurious leather pieces in several corners of the house. Gauri Khan, who shared a rare peek of her family home with Vogue India revealed, “I don’t like minimalist spaces, I love things that are warm, eclectic, personal and collectible. My home has been built gradually over years of collecting stuff that I feel passionately about. It’s essential to make something your own.”

Khan also explained that every member of the house has contributed in creating their family home. For example, the couple's daughter, Suhana Khan, has added elements of ballet, a dance form she is particularly fond of, to her space. Meanwhile, Gauri Khan's favourite picks include a jade Ganpati statue, and a life-sized marble Radha-Krishna sculpture.

Gauri Khan's “happiest place” within Mannat is its terrace, which has been specifically designed to protect the family’s privacy and at the same time, allow Shah Rukh Khan to greet his fans on special days. Khan has, in the past, made it a point to step out for a few minutes on occasions including Eid and his birthday. Every once in a while, the actor brings his youngest, AbRam Khan, out with him too, making it a dual celebration. When the Khans open their doors for parties, they also enjoy giving this space a festive makeover. Do you remember how they lit their terrace up with hundreds of fairy lights for Diwali back in 2018?

Walk through Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s living room

Bold hues and statement pieces are a common feature in the Khans' house, and this is especially evident in their living room. Bringing a rustic vibe to the space is a brick wall that displays their modern art collection, and a vintage safe that has been converted into a bar makes an interesting conversation-starter. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows brings natural light into the room, off-setting the drama of the plum, brown and black couches that sit around a clear glass coffee table. Gauri Khan, who is a fan of maximalist creations, picked a pair of four-foot tall black vases from Paris, and a canvas of Subhash Awchat’s reclining clown to complete the room. The hero of the room, however, is the gilded Ravinder Reddy sculpture that commands everyone's attention.

Walking up the staircase, one room that you cannot miss is Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan's bedroom. Behind their deep wooden door sits a large space with pristine white marble floors, a brown velvet couch, and a king size bed topped with a combination of animal print and gold pillows. Playing up notes of beige, and brown, the couple's room falls perfectly in line with the palette of the rest of their home. A reflective headboard further opens up the space, which also features massive windows for that bring in natural light.

“I like neutral shades and classic materials like leather, which look better with age,” Gauri Khan said in an interview. And staying true to her style, her walk-in closet comes with soothing white marble floors, just like her bedroom, along with a regal leather throne. While gold-detailed floor-to-ceiling shoe racks line one wall of the closet, an Art Deco-style dressing table reflects the opposite end of Khan's wardrobe space, which houses rows and rows of full hangers, complete the room.

Taking a different route from the rest of the house, AbRam Khan’s room features hardwood floors in a lighter shade of brown, along with interiors in  white and bright blue. Another section of the home has also been converted into a play area for him, and features an entirely different aesthetic from the rest of the space. In his room, you will spot a cream armchair, and in the midst of all the electric cars and Lego pieces, a favourite pillow that never leaves his side.

Inside Shah Rukh Khan's study: His wall of prized trophies

If you ever meet Khan at his home, it will probably be in the star's study. The My Name Is Khan actor is known to spend a lot of time in this room, and often hosts meetings here as well. Not a typical study, this area of Mannat follows a dramatic aesthetic with a neoclassical columned facade and luxurious leather fittings. You will also spot all the awards Khan has received over the years spread across the room, finding a space within bookshelves that are stocked to the brim.

Inside the Khans' personal home theatre

Signe Vilstrup

Being in the movie business for close to three decades, it doesn’t come as a surprise that Shah Rukh Khan has a special spot in his home dedicated to films. As you enter the home theatre, bright red walls mounted with vintage posters of Bollywood classics like Sholay, Mughal-E-Azam and Ram Aur Shyam take you back in time. Charlie Chaplin’s framed walking stick is another important element that adds a special touch to the room. 42 burgundy leather recliners, mahogany velvet walls, and an expansive movie collection (which, of course, include every Shah Rukh Khan movie to date) complete the personal theatre.
