wiring pinout needed for RJ11 to DB9 serial
« on: February 24, 2015, 03:19:39 AM »
I got a slightly newer (used) Dell laptop to run my weather software and the serial port seems recessed so that the Davis serial adapter doesn't stay connected very well and you can't screw in the "stabilizing posts" on the serial connector.  So I have an old serial cable and I would like to make an RJ11 female to DB9 female and need to know if this is the proper pinout?  The colors are the actual colors of the cable coming out of my DB9 female.

Seems to be some discussion on this here. Scroll down to member "kenh' who describes his adapter pin-out. Hope this is what you were asking about and sorry if it wasn't.

Yes, thanks. That is what I was looking for.  I find it odd that it has not been discussed on this forum previously.  It also appears my pinout is not correct if kenh is to be believed.

Ah, I figured it should be here somewhere but when I searched for serial pinout most of the first search results came up with the data logger pinouts.  Thanks Belfryboy.

I have modified my diagram for anyone that might need it.  The colored rings around each of the DB9 pins are the colors of the actual wires coming from the DB9 female that I cut to make this adapter.  Those colors may not match up to yours but the RJ11 colors are correct.

I don't need it now, but did awhile ago.  So if I need it again, your nice graphic makes it easier to follow.

You did a nice job with the various elements clearly connected.  Even I can follow it!

I've been scrounging a while and this seemed to make sense.

I am trying to plug this console with Davis Logger in to PC with Serial-USB adapter. I wired up the DB 9 and plugged in to USB dongle. No recognition in Davis software.

I scrounged some stuff on direct connection to the expansion connector and could go RPI I suppose but I wanted to use this spare with PC.

Do I actually need the rest of the connection gear with RJ to serial dongle? Or do I need to dig out a coal burner with native serial?

I did end up wiring up that serial connector and getting it to work with Virtual VP (which feeds the other WX software I use in my signature), but I don't use the Davis software so I can't help you there.  I also have never messed with a RPI (I assume that is Raspberry Pi) so I cannot offer any help there either.  I can tell you that I later upgraded to a laptop without a serial port and used the serial cable I built plugged into a serial to USB adapter and it has worked fine ever since.

Thanks for the info pico

So wired just like that......runs data no problem......

I will have to swap over to an old PC with a port and try it. I only have the one SERIAL/USB able to locate just now. Although it worked fine with a handheld GPS.........

Process of elimination lol

The serial to USB that I'm using is a Sabrent USB 2 to DB-9 serial.   This one:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IDSM6BW/

Fer 10 bucks it would be worth a try. The one I have is NOT the prolific chip. Might make a difference.

Thanks for dropping by.  [tup]

I had upgraded to Win 10, only to find out my USB to serial with the Prolific chip not  only did not work, but there was no upgradable driver to load.  I did get a different brand, can't recall right now which one, and it did work and Win 10 updates have been ok.

Well worth the time to check it.

I guess I should add that my Sabrent Serial to USB is also working fine on Windows 10, and I'm pretty sure I didn't need to install any drivers (using native Win 10 drivers).

In some cases that is due to the chip actually being counterfeit. Witked fine up til now but W10 rejects it and the real drivers do not recognize it.

My FTDI version works fine in any PC with other data being input but no joy with Davis Logger.

One way or another lol

Hmmmmm, no luck with new adapter.

Will have to try the old PC or even another console.  ](*,)

All right Ladies.

Finally got some undistracted time and built a little test bed. Allowed me to distinctly and correctly hook it all up instead of futzing around with soldering little wires and jumping alligator clips.

Works a treat on this VP1 console I have.

Wiring IS correct in post #4.

I picked up an adapter that pico linked in post 9 and it works fine.

Now that wiring is confirmed I will try other adapter too.
