Horizon Zero Dawn trailer reveals formidable foes, friendly Lance Reddick

Learn about Aloy’s story

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 16 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

A new trailer for Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn drops some more details about the game’s story, offering a glimpse at both friends and enemies of our hero, Aloy.

The trailer begins with a limping Aloy discovering that members of her tribe have been massacred — an event that she soon realizes was “only the beginning.” In an effort to find out more about the attackers, she leaves her tribe’s sacred lands and ventures to a place called Meridian. There, she spreads the word that the masked killers who massacred her people pose “a threat to us all.”

It turns out that these villains are dredging up some powerful ancient machines — “a storm of shadows, to take back what’s ours” their leader calls it. What’s more, the robots attack with a corrupting influence that allows the enemies to take control of friendly machines.

One of the characters who seems to want to help Aloy and her tribe is a mysterious figure who appears to her in a hologram. The man, who calls himself “an interested party,” is voiced by Lance Reddick and bears the actor’s face. Reddick has a long list of acting roles in TV shows such as The Wire and Fringe, as well as movies like John Wick, but he has also appeared in video games including Destiny and Quantum Break.

Guerrilla Games will likely have more to reveal on the “post-post-apocalyptic” world of Horizon Zero Dawn before the game launches Feb. 28. It will be available exclusively on PlayStation 4, with support for the PlayStation 4 Pro and high dynamic range (HDR) color. For more, check out our hands-on impressions from E3 2016 below.
