[Rewarded Review] Better than the 720p version in several ways.
AndyS· Review provided by bestbuy.com · December 29, 2023
I first purchased the 720p version of this TV, as a 24" screen at any distance is pretty much just as clear as 1080p; however, using in my kitchen often only a few feet from the screen, it's noticeable. A small variance is that on this 1080p version, the support legs are angled out at the front, in toward the back (rather than the straight/perpendicular legs of the 720p model), and this fit my application better.

The biggest difference (aside from the better resolution) and one which makes it 100% worth the $20 price difference (at the time of this writing, and with both on sale) is the matte/non-glare screen on the 1080p version. It is a night and day difference in viewing ability. In the attached photo, you'll notice the difference right away.

The TV is bulkier than it needs to be, but that bulk gives it space for slightly bigger speakers than a thinner set. The sound remains mediocre, though, requiring the sound setting of "Clear Voice" for the best intelligibility while watching standard shows. Volume is adequate for my purposes.

This TV does have the ability to pair with Bluetooth devices including speakers and earphones, even though the instructions never mention it. You need to go to the "Main" settings page from the FireTV screen, and you'll find it, and a lot of other unreferenced settings. This was a desired feature, but in my case, I may not be able to use it. The BT sound settings allow for only 1 -200ms offset which, in my case, is inadequate. The video leads the audio ever so slightly, and just enough to make it distracting and annoying.

Picture quality is great right out of the box in "Standard" mode, though in darker environments, "Movie" looks a bit better.

I haven't used the FireTV interface enough to weigh in on it, as I gave a Google TV device plugged in instead. That said, setup was straightforward, and the GUI is initially easy to navigate.
[Rewarded Review] Decent Value If You Overlook the Sub-Par Picture

This TV here exemplifies the question "How much are you willing to sacrifice for price?" and, in my opinion, mostly falls short of being an acceptable trade-off between price, features, and quality.

Picture quality is objectively poor, though not so bad I can't see it being used as a kid's TV, in a guest room, or situation where it's not your primary TV. Colors are washed out, and the minimal calibration controls mean that getting something even close to 'good enough' is basically impossible. After fiddling with the picture calibration controls for an hour, I was able to get something that wasn't too bad, but the out of the box settings are terrible and there isn't much room for improvement.

Audio is tinny, with non-existent bass and overwhelming treble. At default settings dialogue is impossible to hear. Once again, there's not enough room in the adjustments to make it sound as good as it needs to.

That said, it's also cheap enough where I doubt these will be primary concerns for those looking to buy it. On to more specific issues:

It's terrible for gaming, with the HDMI inputs experiencing notable lag even when set to "Game" mode, and it's even worse as a PC display. DO NOT BUY if you want to hook up a PC or game console to this thing; you will be disappointed and frustrated.

Fire TV OS is a mixed bag. On one hand, it has pretty much anything you need for a smart TV platform, on the other it's easily the worst looking, most crowded interface out there , and the amount of ads you'll experience will make you wish you'd bought a dumb TV, instead. Still, the interface is responsive enough in its price and weight class that I can't complain too much.

From a feature standpoint, I do appreciate the 3 HDMI inputs on the TV, and that one of them has ARC. I also appreciate the analog composite AV inputs for all my retro gaming and video needs.

Tl;dr - unless you're super cash-strapped, it's probably better if you look elsewhere.
[Rewarded Review] 1080p model is better, but it's not why you think.

This 720p TV is adequate for most every application in which it will be used, but there is one feature that's lacking with makes the 1080p model well worth the extra $20 (at the time of this writing with both versions on sale).

A 24" screen at any most any standard viewing distance is pretty much just as clear as 1080p; however, in my kitchen I'm often only a few feet from the screen, and the difference it's noticeable. And if you have any intent yto use this as a secondary computer monitor, don't even hesitate to go 1080p.

A small variance is that on the 1080p version, the support legs are angled out at the front, in toward the back. On this 720p model, they're straight/perpendicular to the screen.

The thing which makes upgrading to the 1080p version, and why I'm VERY glad I upgraded, is the matte/non-glare screen on the 1080p model. It is a night and day difference in viewing ability. In the attached photo, you'll notice it right away. In my opinion *no* TV, laptop, tablet, or monitor should have a glossy screen. None.

I haven't used the FireTV interface enough to weigh in on it fully, as I have a Google TV device plugged in instead. That said, setup was straightforward, and the GUI is initially easy to navigate.

As it is, though, the gloss screen is enough to cause me to steer people toward the 1080p version instead of this one.
[Rewarded Review] bad choice for over-the-air tv and for elderly
mixsal22· Review provided by bestbuy.com · December 20, 2023
Not good for over-the-air broadcast television. Not good for an elderly person who is not technically inclined. Not a bargain in spite of low price. Remote control does not even have a number pad, so if you want to be able to type in channel numbers you have to buy a different remote control for $20 or more and then program it to this tv. The television is designed mainly for streaming, so it always starts up at a home screen oriented to streaming. If you want to start in live tv or a particular input you have to lookup the settings on the Internet. But that will only work for a few days because the tv is constantly updating and every time it updates it forgets the input setting and goes to the home screen again. If you want to avoid this problem somewhat you can disable app updates but cannot disable system updates. In other words, just to allow someone to watch basic live tv, you have to do all these technical things to keep the tv from sabotaging you. Impossible for an elderly person. Also, the remote has hardly any features and they expect you to use voice commands. This requires you to login to an Amazon account and configure voice response. Is a non-technical person going to do this? Other television features are only available if you login to an Amazon account. I guess that's why they call it a Fire tv, but I had no idea the tv is so limited without Amazon. One of the reasons for buying a low-end tv is to watch broadcast television but this tv makes that most simple of tasks very difficult. I got it for an elderly person and wish I had spent a little more and bought a different brand.
