Breast Abscess (Galactocele)

A condition that occurs in breastfeeding women, due to blockade of a milk duct and accumulation of milk resulting in a swelling.

This is a very painful condition, if not treated in the early few days with antibiotics, will result in secondary infection of the collection, thus forming an abscess.

Once an abscess is formed, it rarely regresses on its own, aspiration is one option, which occasionally helps, but surgery with drainage of the abscess is the only successful treatment available.

Here is a young lactating mother, who suffered from a painful swelling in her breast. She underwent surgery, where the pus was drained through a circumareolar incision in order to minimise the scar on her breast.

She healed well and in a few months, the scar will almost be invisible.
